A minimum of 64 civilians were killed in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were detained.

Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
