Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
