Detonations and Low-Flying Jets Reported in Venezuela's Capital City Caracas

Reports circulated of multiple explosions and the noise of low-flying aircraft in Caracas in the small hours of Saturday morning. This situation has prompted claims from Venezuela's government and requests for global scrutiny.

Caracas Condemns Washington of Attack

Venezuela's socialist regime has condemned the US of what it calls "imperial aggression," claiming that ex- President Donald Trump allegedly ordered strikes against the Latin American country. In an official statement, the government asserted that attacks had targeted Caracas and three other regions: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"Our primary goal of these strikes is to take control of our nation's natural resources, notably its crude oil and resources," the statement asserted.

Venezuelan officials appealed to the world to censure the actions, which it termed a "clear infringement of international law" that put countless of lives in jeopardy.

Reports of Explosions and Military Installations Targeted

Residents spoke of experiencing at least several detonations around 2:00 AM local time. People in various neighborhoods allegedly rushed into the open.

"Everything shook. It was terrifying. We heard blasts and planes in the distance," stated one witness.

Black smoke was observed pouring from major defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, where president Maduro is believed to reside.

Global Reaction

The leader of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, wrote on social media that "Right now they are bombing Caracas... attacking it with projectiles." He requested an immediate meeting of the Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just joined the Security Council, announced it would initiate operational measures at its shared border with its neighbor.

Preceding Events

These reported attacks come after a prolonged military buildup by the Trump administration against the Maduro administration. Beginning in last summer, authorities reported a major American military presence off the country's northern coast and a series of air strikes on ships linked to illegal activities.

Venezuela's administration has stated "a state of external disturbance" and directed all national defense measures to be initiated. It has also called on its supporters to take to the streets and "repudiate this imperialist aggression."

The White House and the Pentagon have not immediately commented on inquiries for clarification regarding the events.
