Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once headed the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood his decision to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company stated.
Political Context
This development arrives after the two houses of Congress decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its documents on the case.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the desk of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications showed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were shared with the public, Summers stated he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild trust and mend bonds with the people closest to me".
Professional History
The economist held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He headed the university from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in Washington where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.
The former official entered the leadership of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
