Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the explosion was located soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area showed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
