Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza CEO Exits After Shift Towards Chicken.
The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who suggested the UK might have hit maximum pizza demand while expanding the chain into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its board.
Executive Transition
Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a long-term chief.
Rennie, who was with the company for a substantial period, had sought to shift Britain's largest pizza takeaway chain towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the quickest rising food category in the international market.
Governance Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the directors over his focus and direction, although Domino's release said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
New Brand Launch
In the autumn, the chain introduced its chicken-focused product line – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in select stores in the North West region and the province.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it views chicken products as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the company chairman, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on identifying the ideal CEO to direct the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales declined by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in half-year profits.
Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut revealed the closure of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets fell into administration.
Wellness Efforts
Adapting to customer preferences towards better nutrition, Domino's has launched lower-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy selection of pizzas below 400 calories as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm a well-known operator. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the CEO position permanently.
Frampton stated: “We have a several active growth and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on executing at pace.”
She added these included additional efforts on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also in need of a full-time chief financial officer until March 16, when Andy Andrea joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Snow serves as interim finance chief.
