The Japanese economic system has experienced a contraction for the first time in a year and a half, primarily driven by weakening exports due to newly imposed US trade duties.

Travel Stocks Decline amid Diplomatic Dispute with Beijing
Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is facing an growing political tension with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japanese travel and consumer firms have fallen noticeably after China urged its nationals to avoid traveling to Japan.
This move by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was sparked by comments from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of deploying troops in the case of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a surge of selling across Japan's leisure shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares dropped by 5.7 percent
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3%
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning advising against travel to Japan brings near-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, luxury retail, and hospitality especially vulnerable."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japan's GDP declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were affected by tariffs imposed by the United States this year.
Overseas shipments were a major factor of the contraction, falling by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Previously, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter.
On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP shrank by 1.8 percent in the three months through September.
"Japan's economy was strong in the first half of this year and today's GDP figures showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a gradual growth trend going forward."
The US administration has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, lowering duties on imported food products including beef, produce, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about increasing costs.
