Jennifer Lawrence Expresses Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer fitting to comment publicly countering the Trump government, worried it could worsen polarizing arguments and further divisions within the nation.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Says Lawrence
During a discussion, the Oscar winner reflected, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I felt like I was acting frantically in a panicked state. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, celebrities have no real impact in any way on who people vote for.”
She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire tearing the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has previously been open about voting for both right and leftwing contenders throughout her life. Growing up with a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the Democratic party and revealing she recognized during Obama’s administration that supporting the GOP was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.
Previous Comments
In 2015, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency would be “the end of the world” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. In the latest campaign, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “as I think she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to defend reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Jennifer Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the limited influence public figures have over the electoral decisions was emphasized by the outcome.
“The second term appears changed,” noted the actress regarding his leadership. “Because he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for four years. He was transparent. And that’s the option selected.”
New Release
Jennifer Lawrence is highlighting Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s movie in which she portrays a recent parent who deals with her mental health in rural Montana. At a interview session for the project in the film festival, Lawrence commented on the situation in the Middle East: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s happening is equivalent to a genocide and it’s terrible.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by stating that she was saddened by “the disrespect in the discourse of the political landscape right now and how that is going to be normalised to the children right now. It’s going to be typical to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She sought to redirect anger about the situation to policymakers rather than entertainers. “Concentrate on who is responsible,” she remarked, seen by observers as a reference to the then-recent pledge signed by numerous arts community members to boycott certain cultural organizations.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her performance in the acclaimed film, is attracting awards attention for her portrayal in her latest project. While the director has denied the story being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, the actress said that she did relate to parts of her role’s experience after the delivery of her new baby, shortly after production wrapped.
“There was concern for my son,” she said, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then doubting everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I began using a medication called Zurzuvae and I took it for two weeks and it was effective.”
Career Moments
The actor also mentioned regarding the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the film while she was some months pregnant and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, about having to set aside self-consciousness. “Honestly, I do have moments where I’m like, What technically are the differences between me and a prostitute? But it isn’t a major concern.”
