A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
