Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
