An analysis titled “Until Harm Ends” sent data inquiries to children’s services departments across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Statistics from one hundred thirty-five local authorities revealed that out of 2,335 minors categorized as having been victimized or believed to be trafficking victims, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

A total of one hundred forty-one government bodies answered queries about unaccompanied minor refugees in their care, who amounted to eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine children. Of these, 1,501 (13%) were reported missing.

Elevated Danger for At-Risk Young People

The analysis, issued by advocacy groups, alerts that these groups are at “extremely elevated danger” of going missing from care.

A number of exploited minors in the UK are local residents while others are from overseas.

They are likely to have been subjected to either sexual exploitation or criminal exploitation, for example by drug trafficking networks.

Institutional Shortcomings in Safeguarding

Local authorities have a statutory duty to safeguard and support exploited and lone minors under youth safety systems. However, there is no published federal data on the issue.

Lodging Problems
