Pat Bamford Joins the Blades Despite Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Chris Wilder

Patrick Bamford has signed with the Championship side only seven months after instigating insulting songs directed at their manager, Wilder.

The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a agreement with the second-tier club in difficulty through the winter. His lengthy career with Leeds concluded by mutual consent in August.

Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player was to lead abusive chants about Wilder amid Leeds' promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the former England international is set to play for Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to pull the team he loves away from the drop zone.

Past Conflict Between the Striker & Wilder

Both men had a past before Leeds moved up to the top flight the previous campaign while Sheffield United were defeated in the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as a "muppet" when the situation was different in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured direct promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.

Reconciliation & Looking Ahead

All seems to have been put behind them with United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, urgently requiring of improvement in attack and Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.

The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. An apologetic Patrick and the Leeds manager, Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the next day.

Wilder commented back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him calling me.

“We spent a short while and the same again I spoke to Daniel as well and had a longer discussion with him and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and accept it and that’s an integral part of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
