Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks after Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
