The Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as His 'Worst Two Days' with the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.
The 44-year-old delivered a somewhat cryptic message in his post-match interview even after notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially improving the mood following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to four fixtures.
Yet, when asked about Gusto's assist and overall performance, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his displeasure over the previous 48-hour period at the club.
"The way the players are eager to learn has been superb and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with a host of problems, they are excelling after a difficult week," he said.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because many people didn't support us."
When pushed further on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."
Injury and Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, remarking they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to appreciate because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments
It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he appeared relaxed, and secured a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any specific media reports had irked him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's supporters, a section of which have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
