The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
