The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad

The English team has chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.

In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely decision.

Spin Options Weighed

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the lower order.

However the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.

In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
