Triple National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The star player was hurt towards the end of the second quarter during an inadvertent collision with team-mate Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the MVP, and he promptly went down to the ground clutching his knee.

The star, that leads the league season in rebounds and dimes, recorded a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before suffering the injury.

The player is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the problem.

"Instantly, he understood there was a problem," commented Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who gets hurt, it's difficult, particularly somebody as special as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"We will continue together. Of course, at this moment, I am more worried primarily about him personally and the letdown of facing something like that."
